A well-designed outdoor space can be just as welcoming as a stylish interior, but with the added benefit of al fresco bliss. From luxe relaxation areas to elegant dining ideas, here are backyard paradise ideas to get your outdoor space in top shape.

Focus on Seating Areas

Creating a plush, weather-resistant seating area will encourage everyone to relax and get comfortable. Start by considering what outdoor furniture you have and whether it would lend itself to your creative vision.

Your current chairs and table can likely be upcycled with a bit of paint and some new seat cushions. If you’re buying new, consider all-weather wicker or cast-iron seating sets as they are low maintenance and will hold up against the elements.

Look for seat cushions for the furniture you already own (or new pieces!) in durable fabrics that are sun and chlorine resistant and add a pop of personality with seasonal shades and patterns. Need inspiration? Look to your summer wardrobe to identify colors that put you in a warm weather state of mind.

Create a Focal Feature

Think about how you and your guests will use the space and opt for a focal point that draws everything together.

Large parasols covering raised areas of a patio, hand-built wooden pergolas, and colored floor tiles can immediately draw attention and link your wider design together. As can a firepit, either a stand-alone or one that’s built into a dining table. A simple online search will generate thousands of backyard firepit ideas, many of which are easily achievable with some basic DIY skills.

Pay Attention to Lighting

Outdoor lighting can rejuvenate a tired patio and allow you and your guests to enjoy your space long after the sun goes down. Layers of lighting help to create ambiance and set the mood so use multiple sources of light when possible. For example, floor lamps and low hanging chandeliers add a touch of luxury to any space. While Tiki lights or lanterns along pathways add a romantic feel.

Use Potted Plants for Privacy

Whether you’re working with a large backyard or small terrace, plants are the key to creating a sense of serenity and seclusion. Buy plants that keep their color year-round and require little maintenance (bamboo palm and boxwood are options worth considering). If you choose taller options, you can use them to create a bit of privacy or to section off different areas

Add a Few Finishing Touches

After figuring out your seating areas, outdoor lighting, and plants, it’s time to accessorize—much like you would in your indoor spaces. These small touches will add warmth to your outdoor space.

A durable outdoor rug can really help add some polish to a backyard paradise. Other things that can help pull your space together? Decorative elements like vases and outdoor candles on tabletops and wall art like sundials and macrame wall hangings can also help add coziness.
