How This Flower Child Is Turning Her Creativity Into a Business

Caroline Lahti has been working with flowers since she was 16. “It spoiled me from the start, because everything else I was like nope.” She needed a career that allowed her to use her creativity on a daily basis. Having been exposed to the floral business at such a young age, Caroline felt she had the confidence to start her own. So she created florabrook. Today her company creates floral arrangements for corporate events, runs flower classes, and produces wild installations for major brands. We caught up with her to find out how she keeps blooming professionally and personally.

What do you find most rewarding about running Florabrook?

My favorite thing is taking on a challenging project that scares me and pushes me, and then doing it and stepping back and admiring the finished product. Showing myself what I’m made of and never questioning my ability or allowing it to stop me from taking on a project is something I’m proud of myself for.

Talk about a professional experience that made you step outside your comfort zone:

A few years ago a big brand asked us to do a flower class in collaboration with them. I wanted to say yes, but had a horrible fear of public speaking. There was definitely that feeling of wanting to decline, but I knew I’d always regret it. Luckily there was wine to calm the nerves, and it really was a fun night. I felt confident, and everyone had such a great time. We’ve done 15-plus classes now and have many more to come. I don’t get nervous at all anymore.

Let’s talk about going places. What’s on the horizon for you?

Now that we’ve been in business for a few years, we’ve been able to form relationships with great clients. We’ve learned we love doing fewer but better events. I like keeping the team on the smaller side and specializing. I’d rather be the company you hire, maybe for a little more money, but you know will go above and beyond for you. I’d rather be the boss who is also a florist and not just the one at the top running the business. That’s the boring stuff!

What do you never travel without?

Got any great advice for solo travelers?

Talk to strangers. I was an anthropology major and love learning different perspectives. They also can give you great recommendations!

What’s your favorite Summersalt travel piece?

I have the High Kick bathing suit in dragon fruit. I normally hate one pieces on me, but somehow this one looks great.

Fill in the blank. Traveling makes me:

Renewed and ready to be back on the grind.

Not planning too much. I usually have a couple things I want to do, and save the rest for asking around once I arrive. It leaves things more exciting and relaxed.
