You’ll Want to Wear this Stylish Activewear Wherever You Go

Annie Gabillet

Denise Lee has big dreams. As a child growing up in Singapore, she aspired to be an entrepreneur. She finally went for it after an experience pursuing another goal: completing in a triathlon. Living and training in New York City, Denise couldn’t find activewear that made her excited about the workout process. So she decided to create a line that made sense for the modern, stylish women she knew. Today, her company, Alala, promises the best in fit and fashion. We chatted with Denise to find out more about where she — and her company — are going next.

What inspired you to launch Alala?

I always wanted to be an entrepreneur because both my parents worked for themselves. After business school I was lucky enough to work for a very successful entrepreneur and also learned a lot from him. During this time, I was training for a triathlon and couldn’t find activewear that inspired or excited me. That was where the idea for Alala came about.

What are you most proud of?

I’m really proud of the work we do at Alala to raise money and awareness for social causes. We have worked with organizations that deal with issues such as domestic violence against immigrant women, women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, and pediatric cancer research.

Let’s talk about “going places.” What’s on the horizon for you?

A long planned trip to Africa has just been postponed until next year so I might do a trip to Mexico City instead.

What is a destination that you’re always telling people, “You have to go there!”

Tanzania. It is just incredible to be out in nature so vast and wild. Makes you remember how small we are in this world as individuals and that this beautiful earth has been here a very long time before us and with our care, will remain after we are long gone.

What do you never travel without?

A fully charged mophie.

Got any great advice for solo travelers?

Solo traveling is wonderful. Embrace the discomfort of being by yourself, but also always be cautious and safe.

Fill in the blank. I fell in love with traveling when:

I was a child. My parents always took us to new places to experience new things, even when we were very young.

Got any go-to podcasts, albums, or books for passing time on a plane?

I love true crime podcasts. Casefile and My Favorite Murder are great. I also listen to business podcasts like The Tim Ferriss Show and Ecommerce Influence. Always be learning!

I look to rent a portable Wifi at the airport when I land in a foreign country. They are very common in Asia and allow you to have Wifi access on your phone at all times for less than $10 a day. Totally worth it not to incur any roaming charges!
