Dopamine Dressing: Summer’s Happiest Colors and How to Wear Them
This season’s color palette is joyfully optimistic, vibrant, and bold.
“I still feel like my best self when I wear styles I favored pre-pregnancy.”
In the past, fashion hasn’t always been synonymous with motherhood but I think we can all agree that some of the best dressed women we know and those that we admire from afar, also happen to be Mothers.
While my relationship with clothes has evolved since becoming a mom in part to a mental and physical transformation, one thing remains constant … I still feel like my best self when I wear styles I favored pre-pregnancy. Whether that’s an unexpected silhouette or daring cutouts, wearing what’s familiar to my personal style makes me feel bold, confident and sexy. And while the rest of the world may not agree with my more daring fashion choices (I get an earful on social media!), I’ve learned a very important lesson that also applies to motherhood: turn down the volume on what other people have to say about decisions you make for yourself and your family!
And in that spirit, here are 5 of my top style tips for new moms:
Mama, now is your time to shine. Opportunities to dress up and look put together are reasons for celebration alone! Break out your favorite dress and highest heels, wear those statement earrings you can’t wear around the baby, try a new lip shade you’ve been coveting, and step into feeling like your most confident self. ESPECIALLY if you’ve been feeling anything but lately.
When putting outfits together, step out of your go-to line up and mix and match pieces you don’t normally wear together. This will give your look the most variety, while still staying true to your individual vibe. I love pairing unexpected pieces together, like a luxe mini dress and a combat boot. This immediately adds visual interest to an outfit and lets you get the most out of your wardrobe without clicking ‘Add to Cart.’
As moms, our free time is at a minimum. One way to make getting dressed in the morning easier is by picking up a few matching sets, they’re an instant outfit with no effort. I love having a variety of sets to choose from in monochromatic hues as well as bold colors and playful prints and share a few in my style lookbook SEEK: Spring Edit. In addition, consider adopting a capsule wardrobe or a personal uniform. These are pieces in timeless colors and cuts that look incredible on you and are made in long-lasting fabrics that you love, so you know that whatever you pull off your hanger will match AND look great on you.
Looking good makes us feel good, and feeling good is what personal style is all about. If you’re not sure what pieces have this effect on you, take a look at the pieces you wear most. What do you like about them? Is it the shape of the garment? Are all of your favorite outfits in a specific shade? Whatever it is about your wardrobe that makes you smile and feel joyful and confident, go out and stock up.
Style rules are meant to be broken. Who says a mom can’t wear a crop top? If you are feeling your best self in something that’s not normally considered “mom-friendly,”, don’t worry about it. You don’t need to ask permission to wear what you love and you don’t need anyone’s approval either. Wear what makes you feel good. It’s as simple as that.
