The trend cycle is a funny thing: Even if you’re not paying attention to it, it can inevitably influence your wardrobe in tiny, almost indistinguishable ways. But if one of your 2023 resolutions is to transform your closet into a tool that feels more timeless than trend-driven, you’re not alone: I’ve spent the last two weeks going through everything I own in pursuit of a more trend-agnostic wardrobe.
In addition to asking myself if it brought me joy, I tried to predict if it would bring me joy in a year from now, too. Of course, I kept some items that felt a little more of-the-moment, like a pair or sporty vintage sunglasses and a puffer coat that feels particularly timely right now—but for the most part, I went through my wardrobe with an elevated, more discerning lens.
Ahead, five trends to ditch in 2023, plus the more timeless item to swap in its place.
OUT: Sky-High Heels
IN: Ballet Flats
Sure, every modern wardrobe should have a pair of high heels, but it should also have a more sensible footwear option, too. And while ballet flats are technically a trend for 2023, they’re a timeless one at that—especially considering they flow in and out of stores every few years with ease. Unless your style is unabashedly feminine, choose a pair that feel unfussy enough to wear with jeans—or to the office with slacks or a skirt.
OUT: Micro-Mini Skirts
IN: Maxi Skirts
2022 was the year of the micro-mini thanks to Miu Miu’s iconic style that went viral—and then some. And while the barely-there skirt had its moment in the sun, a more timeless option is a midi or maxi skirt, especially of the pleated variety. If you prefer something that feels more modern, size up in one that you can wear at your hip, and then belt later for a more timeless look. (If you’re up for a hunt, there are tons of vintage maxi skirts on the market at places like I Am That Shop, Little High Little Low, and The Break.)
OUT: So-Small Micro Bags
IN: Carry-All Bags
The Jacquemus effect has just about run its course as far as the micro-bag trend goes, which means it’s finally time to cram everything you own into a stylish carry-all bag, rather than in a mix of cumbersome canvas totes. Embrace the return to a timeless silhouette with something big enough to fit your laptop, wallet, keys, and maybe even a change of clothes.
IN: Vintage Leather Jacket
A shacket, of course, is a shirt-jacket combo—and while there’s nothing intrinsically trendy about them, there was something strangely reminiscent about them. Maybe it was their uncanny resemblance to the late-aughts chambray trend, or maybe it was the fact that just about every store carried its own version of one in 2022. Either way, it’s best to invest in something that’ll be timeless for years to come, like a vintage leather jacket.
OUT: Anything You Don’t Love Yourself In
IN: Well-Tailored Pieces You Love
Bottom line: There’s nothing that belongs in your closet less than something you don’t feel great in. If you have a pile of items that you’re waiting to fit into or get tailored, give yourself a 30-day window to get it done, or force yourself to donate them. If you can’t make time for an item you really love in a month, you probably don’t really love it.
