The Only Guide You Need to Glamourous Lake Como

Elise Armitage writes the travel and fashion blog What the Fab and shares her adventures on Instagram @wtfab. Below she’s dishing on a recent trip to Lake Como, Italy.

Lake Como is one of the dreamiest places I’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting and it is definitely the prettiest lake I’ve ever seen! Sorry Tahoe, you’re cute too, but Lake Como takes the cake. With its dramatic scenery, beautiful architecture, and charming villages, it’s no wonder billionaires like Richard Branson and George Clooney choose to have villas there. If Lake Como is on your must-see list, here’s everything you need to know.

Where to Go in Lake Como

While the lake is named after the town of Como, the towns of Bellagio and Varenna are known for being the most picturesque. You can easily take the train from Milan to Varenna in only an hour, spend some time in Varenna, and then take a 15 minute ferry across the lake to beautiful Bellagio. If you have limited time you can pretty much skip the actual town of Como without missing much.

What to Pack

The Harbor swimsuit was giving me all of the Sophia Loren vibes in Lake Como. For a two piece, The Fused Delta Bikini Top in Sea Urchin & White Sand will give you the classic look you’re looking for. And The Fused Oasis has all of the Italian glam feels.

Where to Stay

Hotel Du Lac is a family-owned hotel right on the lake in Bellagio. The hotel has excellent service, gorgeous rooms, and major Wes Anderson vibes. Get a lake-view room and take in the incredible scenery while sipping your coffee on the patio for a relaxing start to your day.

Where to Eat

Alle Darsene di Loppia is known for being one of the best restaurants in Bellagio. The restaurant is in a beautiful garden overlooking Lake Como, making for a serene setting. Don’t miss their scallops and their quiches.

La Goletta in Bellagio overlooks the pool of the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, and just beyond that the lake. They serve classic Italian cuisine, blending several different regions. Be sure to order their prosciutto pizza, with burrata-stuffed crust. Yum!

What to Do

Boat Ride

The most impressive views are from the water, so you’ve got to get out on the lake! Whether you book a private boat ride our join a small group boat tour, it’s such a fun experience. The combination of the mountains, hillsides, beautiful towns, and of course jaw-dropping villas surrounding the lake make for the most incredible scenery. Taxi Boat Varenna offers both private and group boat rides.

Explore the Villas

You can tour many of the impressive villas around Lake Como, and what’s a villa without an amazing garden? The gardens and views from Hotel Villa Cipressi are absolutely breath-taking, and admission is only six euros.

Hike

Given all the hills and gorgeous views, there are a lot of different hiking trails around Lake Como. The Sentiero del Viandante hike from Varenna to Bellano is a wonderful place to start. You’ll begin by heading up a steep incline, and then enjoy views of the lake, and olive groves. Be sure to give yourself enough time to stop and admire all of the pretty villages and churches along the way.

We had such a wonderful time in Lake Como, admiring all of its beauty. I’d love to come back and spend more time there . . . or you know, own a villa there, Clooney style.
