A Local’s Guide to Stockholm

Annie Gabillet

Stockholm-resident Aleksandra Avli is all about human connections. As the founder and CEO of the app HON (Her Online Network), she helps female entrepreneurs and professionals connect in real life with other likeminded women. So it’s no surprise that one of her favorite things about her city is the people who live there. We caught up with Aleksandra to find out what exactly makes the Swedish people — and capital — so special. Here is her guide to the best things to do in Stockholm.

When you think of Stockholm, what comes to mind?

Waking up early during the summer and grabbing my bathrobe and coffee cup and going for an early swim in the ocean before anyone is up. This is what makes Stockholm a unique place. The Swedish summers are mind-blowing when it comes to nature and weather!

If we’re visiting, how long should we spend there?

I would say two days minimum. One day in the city and one day in the Archipelago, on one of the 1,000 islands.

What are your favorite restaurants?

Share something helpful only a local would know:

Buy Acne at Acne Archive while you’re in town. It’s 50 percent the ordinary store price.

Got any travel tips for getting around the city?

The best way to experience Stockholm is by renting a City Bike. Or, a Voi, electric scooter that you can find everywhere in the city through their app.

What is a tourist activity that’s totally worth it?

A Swedish FIKA (coffee and cake) at Rosendal Garden!

What is your favorite neighborhood?

My own neighborhood, The Green Valley (Gröndal), because it’s so close to the forest and the ocean. Waking up here is the true definition of quality of life for me.

Best place to people watch:

Riche and Sturehof.

Best place to get a nightcap?

I’m a big fan of the Bank Hotel lobby bar. Very stylish and serves the best mezcal in town.

What do you hope people visiting this city discover about it?

I hope really interesting female entrepreneurs discover my new app, HON (Her Online Network), and use it to connect with like minded superstars during her visit.

What keeps you in Stockholm?

The people and quality of life. Some of the best humans in the world live here.
