Travel Hacks: Staying Active While Traveling

Wellness Blogger, Trainer, and Nutrition Coach Minna Lee is no stranger to being on the road and on the go. (Her tips and guides to must-visit cities around the globe are some of our personal favorites here at Summersalt!) Here, she shares some easy ways to get the most out of your next trip by making sure self-care and physical activity are on your to-do list while traveling.

Take advantage of whatever is different about your surroundings to get your workout in!

Sticking to a workout or wellness routine while traveling can be a challenge, what are your tips for making it easy? (And fun!)

Take advantage of whatever is different about your surroundings to get your workout in! Whether it be hitting the slopes, running in a new park, or using a limited hotel gym to get more creative with your workout regime, it’s great to break out of the norm and play. Emphasis on play and exploring!

How do you think proper self care while on vacation or while traveling can enhance the trip experience?

Not feeling at your physical best while traveling and trying to soak up new sights and experiences is definitely not fun! Things like jet lag and odd sleeping schedules can’t always be avoided, but proper self-care like hydrating, working out, and winding down at the end of the day can go a long way in helping you fully enjoy your vacation. It’s also easy to slip into vacation mode where you almost feel obligated to go indulge in all the eats and drinks mindlessly, but I find that just paying attention to what you and your body truly want helps reach a happy medium naturally—indulge when you want, but don’t feel pressured just because you’re “on vacation.”

What’s the best, most scenic place you’ve done an outdoor workout? What workout spot is on your bucket list?

I love hiking and I try my best to get to a trail whenever I can! Mount Rainier in Seattle and a trail in Switzerland were two of the most scenic hikes I’ve ever done, in completely different ways. I’m dying to experience more of the outdoors in Australia, but I’m also really wanting to explore the USA’s backyard in the national parks of Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming.

Share the 3 best stretching and/or workout moves you can do anywhere!

The “World’s Greatest” stretch is something you can do anywhere you have enough room to put down a yoga mat (even though you don’t need a mat for it). I love “clockwork lunges” to get some multi-directional movement in and to get those legs and hips awake after a long flight. Finally, some core work with a basic “dead bug” is easily done anywhere and can be intensified to any level.

The “Dead Bug” Core Routine:

• Lie on your back with, arms extended in front of your shoulders.
• Bend hips and knees to a 90-degree angle.
• Tighten abs and press your lower back into the floor.
• Take a deep breath in. As you exhale, slowly extend your left leg toward the floor and bring your right arm overhead. Keep your abs tight and don’t let your lower back arch.
• Slowly return your arm and leg to the starting position.
• Repeat with opposite arm and leg.
