Why This Successful Mom Enjoys Traveling With Her Kids — and By Herself

Kate Kittredge is good at her job. As the head of brand strategy for ThirdLove she’s helped the company become the fastest-growing online bra and underwear company. “We’ve been able to build an emotional connection with our customers,” Kate tells us. Too often we associate emotions like frustration with our bras. The underwire digs in. The cups don’t quite fit. But ThirdLove has changed that by creating innovative bras that come in more than 70 sizes, including half sizes. We caught up with Kate to learn more about where she’s going in her career — and personal life — and to get her travel hacks, which include packing light. One thing you definitely need room for in your suitcase? A comfy bra from ThirdLove.

Tell us about an upcoming adventure.

Next summer, we’re hoping to take our girls to Italy. They are both fluent in Italian because they attend an Italian immersion preschool here in San Francisco. I can’t wait to see them running around talking to everyone in Italian, ordering a gelato with a perfect accent — they’ll be our translators!

Got any great advice for solo travelers?

Solo traveling is one of life’s greatest pleasures. These days, the world is so small. If I’m traveling somewhere I’ve never been before, I always like to see if there is someone in my extended network living in that city or place. It’s nice to grab a coffee or a glass of wine with a local and get some insider tips on what to do and see.

What do you never travel without?

I always travel with an eye mask. I am very light sensitive so having a comfortable eye mask really helps me get a good night’s sleep in unfamiliar places

Fill in the blank. Traveling makes me:

Feel more creative and more connected to others.

What’s your favorite Summersalt travel piece?

The Voyager. I love a classic black one-piece swimsuit!

Got any go-to podcasts or albums for passing time on a plane?

Read a book! (If I’m not flying with my kids.) Sadly, I haven’t had a ton of time for fiction lately, but if I’m traveling for pleasure I like to bring along at least one fiction book. Anything by Roxane Gay.

What’s your most valuable travel hack?

Pack light! If you plan well, you can often get a few outfits by just packing a few key pieces. There’s nothing worse than lugging around a huge bag through airports, trains, in and out of taxis and hotels.

Let’s talk about going places: what’s on the horizon for you?

I’ve always been passionate about advocating for equity in our educational system. I started my career with Teach For America, and witnessed first-hand how completely skewed our system is. Now that my girls are in school themselves, I’m reminded on daily basis the importance of really good childhood education as the foundation for creating lifelong learners. In the coming year, I’d love to join the board of an education non-profit seeking to improve educational inequities here in the Bay Area.

What business advice do you want to share with women?

Find a mentor early in your career, and stay close to her as your life changes. I’ve found it incredibly helpful to have a mentor as I’ve tried navigating the very difficult waters of working motherhood.
